Mattress Recycling

Each mattress sent to landfill takes up 0.75 cubic metres of space. By recycling mattresses we can divert them from landfill, saving precious landfill space and resources.

Central Coast Council, in partnership with its contractors, has implemented a new process that recycles mattresses delivered to their Waste Management Facilities.

Mattress materials are separated for reuse and recycling. The springs are sent to metal recyclers for reuse as railway wheels; the foam is foam repurposed into carpet underlay; the material is utilised in decorative wall panels and the remaining products, including floc, wood and plastic is processed as biofuel.

There is a cost involved to dispose of a mattress at any one of Council’s Waste Facilities.

Mattresses can also be collected for free through the kerbside collection service available to most households.
